WHAT I LEARNT FROM UNPLUGGING

The world is advancing so fast with each passing day, creating something new and different. The trends are changing and we are all trying to keep up. Everyone is trying to be known, one way or another and those who aren’t trying to get known, are busy trying to know others. To know the latest music, the latest fashion, and even keeping up with celebrities and public figures. We are all trying to meet up to something that is on a fast pace and never-ending.

For a while, I have been feeling the need to unplug and reduce stress as I have been busy with so many things; writing, updating my social media, college and work. I’ve gotten tired of checking my emails, switching on my phone to see lots of unread messages and hearing the sound of notifications on my phone. I became tired of being connected for so long that I decided to unplug.

Unplugging is to stop using an electronic device, especially for relaxation and to reduce stress. It is detaching yourself from the internet for you to clear your head. It is disconnecting from social media to connect with yourself. These are times when you just have to take a break from all of your distractions and things that keep up busy when you need to unplug.

What I Learnt From Unplugging

1. It takes away anxiety.

This is what I enjoyed most from unplugging. Most of my anxiety comes from me figuring out what to write, how to write, making sure I wasn’t making mistakes and trying to control my result, and most of my write-ups are online. Unplugging took away 70% of my daily routine. I had to overthink about nothing and it was an amazing experience. I have never had to overthink anything.

2. It gives you time to finish incomplete tasks.

Being plugged for a long time left me a pile of incomplete tasks. I don’t always get time for myself as I am too busy keeping up online and going offline did the opposite to me. I had time to go back to my unfinished tasks and complete them.

3. It makes you creative.

I think one of the reasons I felt drained was because of the constant repetition of my routine. I became bored and tired because I always had to do the same thing over and over again. As much as the constant repetition was a challenge, doing just that made it worse. Being unplugged, I had time to try something different, challenge myself and be creative.

4. You become aware of your environment.

Unplugging made me aware of my environment as I wasn’t staring at a screen anymore. I was more conscious of what was going on around me and who was standing next to me. I had more face to face conversations and if I wasn’t someone, I’m enjoying my environment.

5. Creates Self-awareness.

Self-awareness is been aware of who you are, what you do and what you don’t and truth is, I got answers to all those questions. I became aware of who I am instead of comparing myself to what I see online. I found out what makes me happy, sad and what excites me. I found myself.

Unplugging is an exercise that I highly recommend. It is purposeful, rejuvenating and resourceful. It gives you a sense of awareness and rest. It gives you a chance to pause, rethink and continue.
