Sadness vs Depression: Recognizing emotions

Is it sadness? Is it depression? Why do I feel like this? Am I depressed? Am I sad? What emotions do I feel right now?

You've probably had thoughts like these at some point in your life. If you think you haven't, you have. You just didn't realize it.

Sadness is the feeling of being sad. It is the feeling of unhappiness, nothing more. It is an emotion that expresses itself when we feel unhappy about a particular situation.

Depression is a medical condition in which a person feels very sad, anxious, and without hope. Depression as a condition, often has physical symptoms.

Depression = Sadness + hopelessness + anxiety

Differences between Sadness and Depression

1. Sadness is an emotion, depression is not.

This claim is backed up by their definitions. Sadness is an emotion, a feeling of unhappiness, and nothing more.

Depression is a state of being. As a medical condition, it has physical symptoms such as inability to sleep or sleeping too much.

2. Sadness is a response, depression is much more.

Sadness is a response to an unhappy event, like the loss of a loved one, pet, job, or even the misplacement of a possession. Depression, however, is caused by life events, genes, or a mix of them.

3. Sadness fluctuates, depression persists.

Sadness as an emotion comes and goes. It lasts as long as the trigger does; with time, we get over it.

Most times, we get over sadness without the help of others cheering us. In the case of depression, professional treatment like therapy and medication is necessary for recovery.

4. Interference in daily life.

When we feel sad, it doesn't affect our daily life so much. Few times, our sadness becomes unseen because we go on with our lives and daily activities.

Depression comes with reduced productivity and efficiency. You bare take good care of yourself. You do whatsoever...

Depression is like a large package, filled with so many emotions and feelings, and sadness is one of them. Depression can be managed and cured, but it takes awareness, acceptance, and knowledge of the illness to tackle it. Sadness differs from depression, depression is worse.
